ITER Tokamak Complex – Detritiation System

The ITER Tokamak is an experimental machine designed to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion energy. It will be the largest facility of its kind in the world and is part of a €20 billion program involving 35 nations. During the assembly phase, more than one million elements, supplied and delivered to the site by international partners, must be integrated into the ITER Tokamak.
The detritiation system is crucial to operational safety because it removes and recovers radioactive tritium from air and water within the facility. Atmospheric and water detritiation, supported by scrubbers and electrolysis, enables the separation and recycling of tritium for reuse as fusion fuel, while ensuring safety by minimizing releases and worker exposure.
Since 2022, Amentum staff members have been embedded at ITER to work on systems definition for the detritiation system and central processing plant, task agreements with Domestic Agencies (for qualification activities), preparation of the inputs for the hot cell detritiation system, discussions with component vendors, and a permeation study, installation and costs optimization, and fabrication quality control.
