Radiation Protection and Characterisation Services

Amentum provides specialist Radiation Protection and Characterisation services, combining deep regulatory expertise with practical, site-based experience to support safe and compliant operations across the nuclear, industrial, manufacturing and research sectors.

Our team of certified Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs), Health Physics and radiological characterisation specialists help clients understand, control and manage radiological hazards. From initial hazard assessment and characterisation through to operational support and regulatory compliance, we deliver proportionate, pragmatic solutions aligned with UK legislation and industry best practice.

We support a wide range of clients including Sellafield Ltd, Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) and Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd, as well as organisations operating X-ray systems, sealed sources and other ionising radiation-generating equipment across non-nuclear sectors.  

Supporting Capabilities in Radioactive Waste Management

Where required, Amentum’s services extend into radioactive waste management, including advice on waste minimisation, characterisation and compliance with environmental permitting requirements. This ensures that radiological protection considerations are integrated throughout the waste lifecycle.  Amentum operates a cobalt-60 gamma irradiation facility at Harwell, Oxfordshire, supporting our ability to provide world-class consultancy on the effects of radiation.

Our Corporate Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) body is approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to provide advice under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17).   We support clients across a broad range of applications, including:
