CEA Marcoule – Waste Retrieval and Conditioning
Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA) selected Amentum for two major waste recovery programs at its Marcoule site in Gard, France.
The 12-year program of work focuses on retrieval and conditioning of waste from CEA facilities which handled decladding and spent fuel processing for gas-cooled, graphite moderated reactors that were operational between the 1950s and the 1980s.
Delivered under an EPCM contract, the scope covers the full project lifecycle, including project management, safety case development, detailed design, construction management, commissioning, and early operational support.
To support safe and efficient delivery, Amentum has deployed advanced technologies throughout the project, including virtual reality, 3D modelling, integration of robotic arms with vision systems, automated requirements and configuration management.
Amentum is also responsible for designing the hot cell used for sorting solid waste, the systems for liquid waste retrieval, and the process line for treatment and conditioning or solidification of recovered waste. Amentum will also design a dedicated production unit to produce geopolymer used to immobilize magnesium claddings.
