The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a Department of Energy facility operated by Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC, an Amentum-led team, WIPP has set the standard over the past 20 years for the safe, permanent disposal of long-lived radioactive defense wastes. WIPP is the nation’s only deep geological repository for the permanent disposal of defense-related Transuranic (TRU) waste. Our mission, to safely and permanently dispose of the nation’s defense-related TRU waste, is essential to the health, safety, and defense of our nation. We are proud to be a part of our nation’s nuclear defense mission and look forward to continuing to serve our nation for future generations.
Located 26 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico, the repository sits 2150 feet below the desert surface in the middle of a 1000-foot thick salt bed. To date, WIPP has disposed of TRU legacy waste resulting in the clean-up of 22 generator sites around the nation.
To date, Amentum led NWP and its heritage companies have transported more than 12,600 waste shipments, traveling over 15 million miles, and workers have emplaced almost 260,000 waste containers in the WIPP underground, where it will remain isolated from the environment forever.
